Our group of Master Gardeners have many committees and activities to be a part of each year. For 2013 we have been busy with Lawrence Home Show on February 15th-17th. We provided information on gardening topics and pest management.

Another group of EMG work with local grade schoolers in the Junior Master Gardener program through the Boys and Girls Club. There is a recruiting drive to invite kids and parents to learn about the class and to sign up interested students. JMG classes run each week from late February to early May. Sessions cover a wide variety of topics and the kids have “hands-on” experiences in the classroom and out in the garden.

A great program for EMG is the Just Food Produce Distribution committee. Master Gardener volunteers are preparing to gather excess fruits and vegetables at the Lawrence Farmers Market beginning in April and will deliver the produce to Just Food. Last season, over 14 tons of vegetables were collected and donated. Committee members will also be encouraging vegetable gardeners to participate in the Plant A Row for the Hungry program, a public service campaign of the Garden Writers Association Foundation.

Providing these programs and services keeps the Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners engaged in service to the community!
